Kyocera SC/SP 90° Square Positive Inserts — SCMT HQ Chipbreaker Stainless Steel
Kyocera 90° square positive inserts with 7° positive rake and 4 cutting edges per insert. The SC family uses a square-shaped insert with hole + molded chipbreaker (SCMT) or ground sharp (SPMT/SPGT) geometry. The 90° point angle provides stronger cutting-edge support than CC/DC geometries while maintaining the lower cutting forces of positive-rake inserts.
This catalog covers 3 Kyocera SCMT SKUs in IC 9.525 mm (SCMT09T3) size — all with HQ high-feed chipbreaker. Two grade families: TN60 cermet (steel finishing) and CA5525 CVD stainless (stainless + tough alloys).

sc-sp-90-square-kyocera indicating SC + SP square positive inserts. Only SCMT is currently stocked (3 SKUs) — the SPGT/SPMT ground variants are not currently available. For related square positive tooling, see our Kyocera Positive Turning Family catalog (CC/CP, DC, SC, TC/TP, VB/VC).About Kyocera SC 90° Square Positive Inserts
The SC 90° square positive geometry combines the strongest cutting-edge support of all positive turning geometries with the lower cutting forces of 7° positive rake. With 4 cutting edges per insert and a square (rectangular) shape:
- Stronger cutting edge than CC/DC due to 90° point angle — handles higher feeds and tougher materials
- Lower cutting forces than negative inserts due to 7° positive rake
- Versatile applications — general steel turning, profiling, and small-diameter work
- 4 cutting edges per insert — better economy than triangular (3-edge) inserts
The SC family includes three sub-designations:
- SCMT — Square with hole + molded chipbreaker. The most versatile SC style for general turning. (3 SKUs in our catalog)
- SPMT — Square positive (without hole) with molded chipbreaker. Less common, used in special applications.
- SPGT — Square positive ground sharp edge for finishing. Currently not in stock.
Kyocera Corporation (Kyoto, Japan) supplies SC inserts with the HQ (high-feed) chipbreaker geometry in CA5525 (CVD stainless) and TN60 (cermet) grades.

SCMT Square Insert — Typical Applications
The square 90° positive geometry is purpose-built for general-purpose turning where stronger edge support is needed than CC or DC inserts can provide.
Stainless Steel General Turning
The HQ chipbreaker combined with CA5525 grade provides excellent chip control and wear resistance on stainless 304/316 work. Industry standard for stainless production turning.
High-Feed Profiling
HQ chipbreaker geometry allows feed rates up to 0.5 mm/rev for profiling operations on stainless and tough alloys.
Steel Finishing with Cermet
TN60 cermet grade achieves Ra 0.4-0.8 µm surface finish on carbon steel at low-to-medium speeds. Excellent for hydraulic, bearing, and sealing surfaces.
Heavy Steel Profiling
The 90° point angle provides stronger edge support than CC or DC for heavier profiling operations on tough steel.
Small-Diameter Turning
SCMT09T3 size fits standard 16 mm tool seats for small-diameter turning on Swiss-type and CNC lathes.
Mass Production Steel Turning
The 4-edge square geometry + HQ chipbreaker = optimal balance of economy and chip control for mass production steel turning.

How to Choose the Right Kyocera SCMT Insert
Selecting the correct SCMT 90° square positive insert involves three decisions:
- Material → Grade: Stainless steel 304/316 → CA5525 (CVD M-grade). Steel finishing → TN60 (cermet).
- Operation → Corner radius: General turning → 0.8 mm (08). Finishing → 0.4 mm (04). Heavy profiling → 0.8 mm or larger.
- Tool holder: SCMT 09T3 fits standard SCLCR/L 09 holders and SSBCR/L 09 boring bars. Standard 16 mm seat.
Tip: For general stainless steel work, start with SCMT09T308HQ CA5525. For steel finishing, use SCMT09T308HQ TN60 cermet. For stainless finishing, use SCMT09T304HQ CA5525.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these genuine Kyocera original inserts?
Yes — all 3 SCMT SKUs in this catalog are 100% genuine Kyocera originals manufactured by Kyocera Corporation in Kyoto, Japan. Each insert ships in original Kyocera factory packaging with full traceability.
What is the HQ chipbreaker?
The HQ chipbreaker is Kyocera's high-feed chipbreaker geometry optimized for elevated feed rates on stainless steel and tough alloys. HQ provides:
- Stable chip breaking at feeds 0.20-0.50 mm/rev
- Stronger edge than standard chipbreakers for higher feed operations
- Compatible with high-feed profiling at 0.5+ mm/rev
- Lower tendency for chip jamming at high depth-of-cut
HQ is the standard chipbreaker for Kyocera's stainless steel production turning.
What does the IC size 09T3 mean?
The 09T3 designation follows ISO 1832 standard:
- 09 = 9.525 mm IC (inscribed circle, the diameter of the hole through the insert)
- T3 = 3.97 mm thickness (1/6" imperial equivalent)
09T3 fits standard 16 mm tool seats (SCMT 09 series is the most common 90° square insert size for CNC lathes).
What's the difference between SCMT and SPGT?
SCMT and SPGT are both square 90° positive inserts but with different specifications:
- SCMT — Square with hole + molded chipbreaker. M-class tolerance. Standard for general turning. (Our stock)
- SPMT — Square positive (no hole) + molded chipbreaker. Special applications.
- SPGT — Square positive ground sharp edge. G-class tolerance for finishing work. (Currently not in stock)
Use SCMT for general turning; use SPGT for finishing where sharp edges matter; use SPMT for special applications.
What tool holder do I need for SCMT inserts?
SCMT 09T3 (IC 9.525 mm) fits standard 90° positive tool holders. Common holders include:
- SCLCR/L 09 — screw-clamp external holders, the most common
- SSBCR/L 09 — boring bars for internal turning
- SCACR/L — 90° lead angle holders for profiling
