M-SIX MFWN90 Face Mills | 90° Lead Angle
6 BEYOND face-mill SKUs for square-shoulder milling. M-SIX insert system, 17-90mm diameter range, shank-mount and body-mount variants, 2-7 teeth, factory-direct pricing.
The M-SIX MFWN90 face mill series is a 90° lead-angle cutter designed for square-shoulder milling, slot milling, and face milling on small-to-medium workpieces. Unlike 45° or 75° lead-angle cutters that leave a tapered edge, the 90° geometry produces a clean, square shoulder with no secondary finishing pass needed. The M-SIX insert pocket accepts standard 04 IC trigon / round inserts, so you can use one cutter body across many insert grades without retooling.
This collection covers two variants. The standard MFWN90 series (5 SKUs) is a shank-mount cutter for 17mm to 21mm diameters, with side-lock fitment in standard tool holders. The MFWN-Mini (1 SKU) is a 90mm body-mount face mill for production face milling of larger surfaces. Both use the same M-SIX 04 IC insert interface.

90° vs 45° vs 75° Lead Angle — When to Use Each
45° Lead Angle
Thinnest chip, lowest cutting force, best for thin-wall parts and unstable setups. Leaves a 45° tapered edge that requires a separate square shoulder pass.
Best for: aluminum, thin-wall steel, low-rigidity setups
75° Lead Angle
Middle ground — partial square shoulder with lower radial force than 90°. Used for roughing where finishing is acceptable or for materials prone to chipping at high radial loads.
Best for: stainless steel roughing, hard materials
90° Lead Angle (MFWN90)
Full square shoulder in one pass. Higher radial force means the workpiece and tool holder need to be rigid. Best for high-quality shouldered parts where the 90° face is the final dimension.
Best for: square shoulder, slot walls, face milling where shoulder quality matters
M-SIX Insert Compatibility
The M-SIX insert pocket accepts any 04 IC insert (4.76mm insert size) with trigon or round geometry. The most common insert codes for the M-SIX MFWN90 cutter body are:
- APKT 1003 / APKT 100308 — trigon 80° positive rake, the standard M-SIX general-purpose insert. Best for steel and stainless finishing.
- RPMT 08T3 — round insert, stronger cutting edge for roughing. Best for cast iron and interrupted cuts.
- RPGX 08T3 — round positive ground insert for high-feed aluminum and non-ferrous milling.
- APMT 1135 — alternative trigon for high-feed roughing in steel.
Recommended Grade by Material
| Material | Recommended Grade | Coating | Insert Geometry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel (P) | BEYOND PVD-coated carbide | TiAlN | APKT 100308 |
| Stainless Steel (M) | BEYOND PVD-coated with sharp edge | Al-rich TiAlN | APKT 100308 (sharp) |
| Cast Iron (K) | BEYOND CVD ceramic or coated cermet | Al₂O₃ + TiN | RPMT 08T3 |
| Aluminum (N) | BEYOND uncoated or DLC-coated | Uncoated / DLC | RPGX 08T3 |
Cutting Parameter Guide
| Material | Cutting Speed (Vc) | Feed per Tooth (fz) | Depth of Cut (ap) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild Steel | 180-250 m/min | 0.05-0.10 mm/tooth | 1-3 mm |
| Stainless Steel (304/316) | 120-180 m/min | 0.04-0.08 mm/tooth | 0.5-2 mm |
| Cast Iron | 100-180 m/min | 0.06-0.12 mm/tooth | 1-4 mm |
| Aluminum (6061) | 400-800 m/min | 0.05-0.15 mm/tooth | 1-3 mm |
| Hardened Steel (HRC 50+) | 80-120 m/min | 0.03-0.06 mm/tooth | 0.3-1 mm |
For the 90mm body-mount face mill, use 4-6 mm depth of cut with reduced feed per tooth (about 0.06-0.10 mm/tooth) to manage chip load across 7 teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What insert fits the MFWN90 cutter body?
The MFWN90 and MFWN-Mini both use the M-SIX 04 IC insert pocket (4.76mm insert size). Compatible insert codes include APKT 1003 / APKT 100308 (trigon 80° positive, general-purpose), RPMT 08T3 (round, roughing), and RPGX 08T3 (round, aluminum). Most major-brand 04 IC inserts will physically fit; verify the chip-breaker geometry matches your material before bulk ordering.
2. What's the difference between MFWN90 (17-21mm) and MFWN-Mini (90mm)?
The standard MFWN90 series is a shank-mount cutter (16mm or 20mm side-lock shank) for small-diameter face milling, slot milling, and shoulder work on smaller workpieces. The MFWN-Mini is a 90mm body-mount face mill for production face milling of larger surfaces, with a 7-tooth body that gives higher feed rate and longer tool life. Both use the same M-SIX 04 IC insert interface.
3. Can I use MFWN90 for slot milling?
Yes. The 90° lead angle and small diameter (17-21mm) make MFWN90 well-suited to slot milling in steel and stainless. For full slotting (ap = full diameter), reduce feed per tooth by 30-40% compared to side-milling, and use a chip-breaker grade designed for chip control (e.g. APKT 100308-MF medium-feed grade).
4. What is the maximum depth of cut?
For the shank-mount MFWN90 (17-21mm), the practical ap is 3-5 mm in steel and 5-8 mm in aluminum. For the 90mm MFWN-Mini, ap can reach 6-8 mm in steel and 10-15 mm in aluminum. Going beyond these values requires reducing feed per tooth to manage radial cutting force on the insert cutting edge.
5. Are these cutters in stock, or made-to-order?
All 6 SKUs in this collection are stocked at the Hangzhou warehouse. Orders placed before 14:00 CST ship same business day. For custom diameters or tooth counts not in this list, contact our sales team for a 2-3 week lead time and minimum order quantity (typically 10 pieces for custom).
