WALTER Tools: Premium German CNC Inserts for Turning & Milling
Walter AG is a 107-year-old German manufacturer of precision carbide inserts, founded in 1919 in Tubingen, Germany. Operating independently within the Sandvik Group since 2017, Walter supplies turning and milling inserts under its signature Tiger·tec® Silver (CVD) and Tiger·tec® Gold (PVD) coating platforms. Our Walter collection curates five high-demand grades — WKP25S, WKP35S, WSM20S, WSP45G — for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron machining, backed by same-day shipping to 50+ countries via DHL / UPS / FedEx.
Why Choose Walter Inserts for CNC Machining
Walter's reputation in the CNC tooling market rests on four differentiators that translate directly into shop-floor performance:
Tiger·tec® Silver (CVD) + Gold (PVD)
Dual coating platforms optimized for steel (Silver, ISO P10–P45) and stainless / high-temperature alloys (Gold, ISO M05–M30 / S05–S20). Each layer (TiCN, Al2O3, TiCN, TiAlN, ZrN) is engineered for wear resistance and thermal stability at sustained cutting temperatures above 800°C.
107 Years of Tooling Heritage
Walter AG has supplied precision cutting tools since 1919, with the Tubingen headquarters continuing to drive R&D in insert geometry, chip breaker design, and grade substrate formulation. Brand lineage includes the Xtra·tec® shoulder milling and Porcupine high-feed families.
Independently Operated within Sandvik Group
Acquired by Sandvik in 2017 but retained as a standalone brand with separate engineering, distribution, and pricing structures. Customers get the rigor of Sandvik-grade metallurgy with Walter-specific Tiger·tec® coating IP.
On-Demand Sourcing with Stock Backing
Cnchome-Beyond maintains core stock of the five Walter grades most requested by US/EU manufacturers (WKP25S, WKP35S, WSM20S, WSP45G, plus equivalents for ADMT/SNMX milling). Larger orders ship direct from Walter EU warehouse within 5-7 business days.

Tiger·tec® Coating Technology: Silver vs Gold
Walter's two flagship coating platforms target different ISO material groups. Choosing the right platform is the single biggest lever for tool life and surface finish in production runs.
| Property | Tiger·tec® Silver (CVD) | Tiger·tec® Gold (PVD) |
|---|---|---|
| Coating type | Chemical Vapor Deposition | Physical Vapor Deposition |
| Layer stack | TiCN + Al2O3 + TiCN | TiAlN + Al2O3 + ZrN |
| Total thickness | ~12-18 µm | ~3-6 µm |
| Operating temperature | Up to 900°C sustained | Up to 800°C sustained |
| ISO material groups | P10–P45, K10–K25 | M05–M30, S05–S20, P05–P25 |
| Typical insert families | WKP25S, WKP35S, WSP45G | WSM20S, WSM21S, WAM415 |
| Best edge condition | Sharp & hone-ground for steel | Sharp for stainless (low BFE / built-up edge risk) |
| Cost premium vs uncoated | ~2.5× | ~3.0× |
Quick rule: Tiger·tec® Silver (CVD) for ISO P and K (steel / cast iron) operations where crater wear and thermal fatigue dominate. Tiger·tec® Gold (PVD) for ISO M and S (stainless / superalloy) operations where built-up edge and notch wear at the depth-of-cut line are the failure mode. Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tiger·tec® Silver coating, and what is it best for?
Tiger·tec® Silver is Walter's CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) coating platform for steel and cast iron turning — a three-layer stack of TiCN (titanium carbonitride), Al2O3 (alumina), and a final TiCN wear indicator layer. Total thickness ~12-18 µm. It targets ISO P10–P45 and K10–K25 workpieces and operates at sustained temperatures up to 900°C. The signature feature is the silver top coat that visibly wears, giving a built-in end-of-life signal.
What is the difference between Walter WSM20S and WKP35S?
WSM20S is a PVD-coated grade (Tiger·tec® Gold family, TiAlN + Al2O3 + ZrN stack) optimized for finishing stainless steel and low-carbon steel, with a sharp honed edge to minimize built-up edge. WKP35S is a CVD-coated grade (Tiger·tec® Silver family) with a thicker Al2O3 layer for thermal stability in medium-to-rough steel machining. In short: WSM20S for finishing stainless; WKP35S for roughing steel at higher Vc.
Is there a Walter equivalent to Mitsubishi US7020 or Sandvik GC4325?
Yes. Walter WKP25S is the closest drop-in equivalent to Mitsubishi US7020 and Sandvik GC4325 in ISO P25 / P30 steel turning. WKP35S aligns with Mitsubishi US7035 and Sandvik GC4335 in P35 / P40 steel. WSM20S aligns with Sandvik GC2015 in stainless finishing. For the full 8-brand cross-reference matrix, see our Grade Cross-Reference Hub.
How do I select a Walter milling insert for stainless steel?
For stainless milling, choose a PVD Tiger·tec® Gold grade (WSM20S variant) with a positive geometry (ADMT / RDMT) and sharp honed edge. Run Vc at 150-220 m/min and fz at 0.10-0.18 mm/tooth with high-pressure coolant (70+ bar). Avoid CVD grades in stainless — the thick Al2O3 layer is prone to chipping under the cyclic loads of milling.
Can Walter BCMT inserts be used on Swiss-type lathes?
Yes, with caveats. Walter BCMT inserts (e.g., BCMT160530R-G55 WKP35S) fit any holder that accepts the corresponding ISO BCMT 16 geometry. For Swiss-type lathes, the constraint is holder OD: most Swiss lathes accept 12-16 mm shank boring bars, so use a Walter S...-BCMT holder in the 12 mm shank class. For deep-reach Swiss work, consider the SNL-style long-reach equivalent.
What is the lead time for Walter inserts to the US or EU?
The five Walter grades in our live inventory (WKP25S, WKP35S, WSM20S, WSP45G, plus the SNMX120520 / WKP25S combination) ship same-day from our Hong Kong warehouse with DHL Express to US / EU destinations in 3-7 business days. Custom Walter grades not listed in our live catalog ship direct from Walter's Tubingen factory in 7-14 business days, with full Certificate of Conformance and Sandvik Group chain-of-custody documentation.
