Aluminum T-Slot Milling Cutter (2-20mm · 55° Helix · Mirror-Polished)
BEYOND brand solid-carbide T-slot milling cutters engineered specifically for aluminum and non-ferrous alloys. 13 standard diameters from 2 mm to 20 mm, each available in 5 tooth-length variants. Fine-grain carbide with mirror-polished flutes eliminates built-up edge on aluminum, and a 55° helix angle gives aggressive chip evacuation at high Vc.

Why Aluminum Needs Different Geometry
Our aluminum-grade T-slot cutters solve the built-up edge problem through three coordinated design choices that steel-grade cutters do not have:
- Mirror-polished flute surface — reduces aluminum adhesion by 60-80% compared to standard ground flutes. Chips slide off instead of welding to the cutting edge.
- 55° helix angle (vs 30-45° for steel-grade) — lifts chips out of the T-slot faster, preventing recutting that compounds BUE.
- No coating (uncoated polished carbide) — TiAlN / TiN coatings chemically react with aluminum at high Vc, accelerating BUE. Aluminum wants no coating + polished surface.
For steel-grade T-slot cutters (TiAlN-coated, 30-45° helix), see our steel-grade T-slot cutter collection. Same diameter range, same tooth-length variants — but built for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron.
Why Choose Our Aluminum T-Slot Cutters
T-Slot Profile Standards (DIN 850)
T-slot profile geometry on these cutters matches DIN 850 / ISO 3337 standard — the same profile as our steel-grade T-slot cutter collection. The cutter diameter (D1) equals the T-slot nominal width, so a 10 mm cutter produces a T10 slot profile. Sidewall angle and bottom relief follow standard machine-tool table dimensions.
| T-Slot Nominal (a × b) | Cutter D1 (mm) | Bolt Size | Typical Aluminum Workpiece |
|---|---|---|---|
| T8 (8 × 15) | 8 | M6 | Small aluminum fixtures, gauge blocks |
| T10 (10 × 18) | 10 | M8 | Standard aluminum machine tables |
| T12 (12 × 22) | 12 | M10 | Medium-duty aluminum beds |
| T14 (14 × 25) | 14 | M12 | Aluminum fixture plates |
| T16 (16 × 28) | 16 | M14 | Large aluminum machine tables |
| T18 (18 × 32) | 18* | M16 | Heavy-duty aluminum fixturing |
| T20 (20 × 36) | 20 | M18 | Industrial aluminum machine beds |
* 18 mm available on request — our stocked range is 2-20 mm. Larger T-slot profiles (T22-T36) quoted on request for production orders.
Aluminum Grades Machined
The mirror-polished, uncoated geometry handles the full range of aluminum alloys plus common non-ferrous materials. Pick your alloy below for the right starting Vc — all values assume sharp cutter, rigid setup, and MQL or flood coolant.
| Material | Common Forms | Vc Start (m/min) | Chip Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6061-T6 | Structural plates, fixtures, machine frames | 180 - 280 | Long stringy chips, easy evacuation |
| 7075-T6 | Aerospace jigs, high-strength brackets | 150 - 240 | Slightly gummy, prefers higher Vc |
| 2024-T3 | Aerospace structural, truck frames | 160 - 250 | Tendency to BUE — keep Vc high |
| Cast Aluminum (A356 / A380) | Engine housings, manifolds | 120 - 200 | Abrasive silica content — watch wear |
| Copper (C110 / C360) | Busbars, electrical contacts | 100 - 180 | Very gummy — sharp cutter mandatory |
| Brass (C360 / C464) | Fittings, marine hardware | 150 - 250 | Clean chip break, minimal BUE |

5 Tooth Length Variants per Diameter
Every diameter ships in 5 tooth-length variants — measured as the cutter's cutting-depth ratio relative to D1. Pick the variant that gives at least 1 mm of cutter clearance past the bottom of your T-slot. All 5 variants are priced the same per SKU.
| Variant | Cutting Depth | Use When |
|---|---|---|
| ×1 | 1.0 × D1 | Standard T-slot — matches most aluminum fixture depths. |
| ×1.5 | 1.5 × D1 | Deeper T-slots where standard ×1 is too shallow. |
| ×2 | 2.0 × D1 | Deep aluminum slots, extended fixture channels. |
| ×2.5 | 2.5 × D1 | Heavy-duty aluminum slotting, large fixture plates. |
| ×3 | 3.0 × D1 | Maximum depth for oversized T-slot profiles. |
Recommended Cutting Parameters for Aluminum
Starting parameters for aluminum-grade T-slot cutters. Aluminum wants higher Vc and higher fz than steel — running too slow causes BUE. Use MQL or flood coolant for any cut deeper than 1 × D1.
| Aluminum Grade | Vc (m/min) | fz per tooth (mm) | ap (pass depth) | Coolant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6061-T6 | 180 - 280 | 0.06 - 0.12 | 1.0 × D1 | MQL or flood |
| 7075-T6 | 150 - 240 | 0.05 - 0.10 | 1.0 × D1 | MQL or flood |
| 2024-T3 | 160 - 250 | 0.05 - 0.10 | 0.8 × D1 | MQL or flood |
| Cast Aluminum (A356) | 120 - 200 | 0.04 - 0.08 | 0.6 × D1 | Flood |
| Copper (C110) | 100 - 180 | 0.04 - 0.08 | 0.5 × D1 | Flood (mandatory) |
| Brass (C360) | 150 - 250 | 0.06 - 0.12 | 1.0 × D1 | MQL or dry |

Aluminum T-Slot vs Steel-Grade T-Slot
Same DIN 850 profile geometry, but the cutter design diverges sharply based on workpiece material. Choosing the wrong grade for your workpiece leads to BUE (aluminum) or rapid edge wear (steel). Quick comparison:
| Design Element | Aluminum-Grade (this collection) | Steel-Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Coating | None (uncoated polished) | TiAlN |
| Helix angle | 55° (steep) | 30-45° (standard) |
| Flute surface | Mirror-polished | Standard ground |
| Vc range | 100-300 m/min | 40-120 m/min |
| fz per tooth | 0.05-0.15 mm | 0.02-0.08 mm |
| ap (pass depth) | 1.0 × D1 (aggressive) | 0.3-0.5 × D1 (conservative) |
| Coolant | MQL or flood | Flood (mandatory for stainless) |
| Workpiece | Aluminum, copper, brass, non-ferrous | Steel, stainless, alloy steel, cast iron |
