About Tungaloy Negative Turning Inserts
Tungaloy negative turning inserts are precision-engineered carbide tools for heavy-duty CNC turning of steel, stainless, cast iron, and heat-resistant alloys. Negative inserts (N designation) have a hole in the center and can be flipped to expose a fresh cutting edge, doubling tool life compared to positive inserts. Tungaloy's negative insert family — CNMG (80° diamond), DNMG (55° diamond), WNMG (80° trigon), TNMG (60° triangle), and SNMG (90° square) — covers the full spectrum of roughing to finishing operations on medium-to-large workpieces.
Every Tungaloy insert on this page is genuine OEM product from Tungaloy Corporation (Japan, est. 1929, part of IMC Group), shipped with full lot traceability. CNCHome-Beyond is an authorized Tungaloy distributor; orders placed before 3 PM China time ship same-day from our Hangzhou warehouse with DHL/UPS/FedEx express delivery in 3-7 business days.

How to Choose a Tungaloy Negative Insert
Step 1: Match the geometry to operation. For profiling and 55° approach angles, choose DNMG. For heavy roughing on steel with high feed rates, choose CNMG in 19mm IC. For small-diameter work where insert clearance is limited, choose WNMG 08mm. For hardened steel finishing (HRC 55+), choose CNGA ceramic.
Step 2: Match the grade to material. Steel → T9125 (general), T9115 (finishing), T9200 (heavy roughing). Stainless → AH725. Hardened steel or high-temp alloys → LX11 ceramic. Precision finishing on steel → NS9530 cermet.
Step 3: Match the chip-breaker to depth of cut. Light finishing (0.2-1.5mm) → TS or 37. Medium (1.5-4mm) → TM. Heavy (3-8mm) → TH or THS. Use the table above to find the right combination.
Step 4: Match the holder. Tungaloy negative inserts fit the Mitsubishi/Tungaloy standard DCLNR/L, MCLNR/L, MWLNR/L, MDJNR/L, PCBNR/L tool holder families. CNCHome-Beyond carries compatible aftermarket holders at 30-50% below OEM — see our turning tool holder guide and use the Insert Holder Selector.
Compatible Tool Holders
Tungaloy negative inserts fit the following CNCHome-Beyond tool holder families (all ISO 5608 standard):
- Double-Clamp External Holders — for heavy CNMG/DNMG roughing
- Multi-Lock External Holders — for general CNMG/DNMG medium cutting
- Lever-Lock (P-Type) External Holders — for quick-change high-mix production
- Screw-Clamp Boring Bars — for internal turning with negative inserts
- Multi-Lock Boring Bars — for ID turning applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Tungaloy T9125 and T9115?
T9125 is the main workhorse CVD grade for general purpose steel turning (P10-P25 ISO classification). T9115 is the finishing-grade with sharper cutting edge for finishing operations (P05-P15). T9125 has a thicker coating for longer tool life in roughing; T9115 has a sharper edge for better surface finish. Use T9125 for the bulk of production (80% of work) and T9115 for the final finishing pass.
When should I use NS9530 cermet instead of T9125 CVD?
NS9530 cermet is the right choice for precision steel finishing where you need: surface finish below 0.4 Ra, close tolerance (±0.01mm), high cutting speeds (180-280 m/min), and lower cutting forces. Cermet has better wear resistance than CVD at high temperatures but is more brittle. Do not use NS9530 for interrupted cuts, cast iron, or stainless steel.
What is the difference between Tungaloy CNMG and CNMA inserts?
CNMG has a chip-breaker groove on both faces; CNMA has a flat (no chip-breaker) on both faces. CNMA is used for heavy roughing with strong cutting forces and poor chip control conditions (deep cuts, tough materials). CNMG is for general purpose with chip control. This collection includes only CNMG-style inserts; CNMA is available on-demand for specialty applications — contact us for quote.
Can Tungaloy negative inserts be used for high-feed milling?
No — negative inserts are designed for turning (lathe) operations, not milling. The chip-breaker geometry and clearance angles are optimized for the chip flow pattern in turning. For high-feed milling, use Tungaloy SPMT or WPMT inserts specifically designed for milling. CNCHome-Beyond can source Tungaloy milling inserts on-demand — contact us for quote.
What is the equivalent of Tungaloy T9125 in other brands?
Tungaloy T9125 is a premium CVD TiCN/Al2O3 grade for general steel turning. Direct equivalents include: Mitsubishi US7020, Sandvik GC4325, Kennametal KC7315, Iscar IC8150, and Walter WSM20S. All perform within 5-10% of each other on standard steel turning. For grade cross-reference and detailed equivalent table, see our Insert Grade Cross-Reference Tool.
What is the minimum order quantity for Tungaloy negative turning inserts?
Sample orders start at 1 piece for grade validation. Standard production orders are 10-50 pieces per item. Bulk pricing tiers: 2-9 pieces 6% off, 10+ pieces 12% off (auto-applied at checkout). For custom grades not in our standard catalog, MOQ is 200 pieces with 6-8 week lead time from Tungaloy Japan. See our warranty and return policy for details on grade validation samples.
