About TN 60° Triangle Negative Inserts (TN-Style)

The ISO 1832 TN-shape family delivers a 60° triangle negative-rake cutting edge — the strongest general-purpose negative turning geometry with the deepest catalog in turning. Mitsubishi's TN lineup includes three main geometry variants:

  • TNMG (M chip-breaker, M tolerance) — 35 SKUs. The workhorse 60° triangle negative with chip-breaker on both faces. Double-edged economy for general roughing and finishing. Multiple chip-breaker variants: MA, MS, MJ, ES, 2G.
  • TNGG (G chip-breaker, G tolerance) — 9 SKUs. Ground-periphery cermet finishing insert with chip-breaker on one face. Premium 60° triangle for mirror surface work on steel and stainless.
  • TNMA (no chip-breaker, A tolerance) — 3 SKUs. Flat-top negative insert with hole only. Used for cast iron heavy roughing where chip-breaking is not needed.

TN inserts are the bread-and-butter negative turning geometry for general CNC lathe work — every production shop has a drawer full of TNMG inserts. The 60° included angle provides the largest nose radius per IC size, making TNMG ideal for both roughing and finishing. Compared to other negative shapes: SN is the strongest but dullest, CN is balanced, DN is the sharpest, TN is the most versatile.
