About 35° Diamond Inserts (V-Style)

The ISO 1832 V-shape family delivers a 35° included-angle cutting edge — the sharpest profile geometry in turning, with the smallest nose radius and the most acute lead angle. Mitsubishi's 35° lineup covers two clearance variants:

• VB (5° positive rake) — Very sharp, low cutting force. Used for profiling, copy turning, and small-diameter finishing on Swiss-type lathes. Common in medical (bone screws, dental implants) and electronics (connector pins) machining.
• VC (7° negative rake) — Slightly stronger than VB while still sharper than 80° CC / 90° SN. VCMT is the workhorse 35° negative insert, popular for stainless steel profiling and small-form-factor turning.

Both VB and VC ship in the same chip-breaker class — M (chip-breaker on both faces, double-edged economy) — with one variant using G (one face chip-breaker, sharp edge) for finish-grade profiling. How to Choose the Right 35° Diamond Insert — 3-Step

Step 1 — Identify the Operation

• Profiling / copy turning (non-interrupted): Choose VB-class (VBGT, VBMT). Positive 5° rake and sharp edge give the best surface finish on complex contours.
• Stainless profiling with light interruptions: Choose VCMT. Negative 7° rake + T tolerance = stronger edge for tougher cuts.
• Mirror finishing on steel: Choose VBGT with NX2525 cermet grade. The 35° positive + sharp ground periphery + cermet = mirror surface.

Step 2 — Match the Grade to Workpiece

• Stainless steel 304/316: US735 (CVD stainless grade) or VP15TF (PVD universal). US735 for heavier profiling, VP15TF for finish.
• Alloy steel / tool steel: UE6020 (CVD steel grade, P20-P30) for general profiling.
• Mirror finishing: NX2525 cermet (P05-P15). Best surface but no interrupted cuts.
• Universal (steel + stainless): VP15TF PVD Miracle Coat — the safest all-around choice.

Step 3 — Verify Holder Compatibility

• VB (35° positive): Use SVJB-style positive turning holders (35° lead angle). Check your holder's lead angle — most Swiss-type lathes use 35° or 90°.
• VC (35° negative): Use MVJN-style negative turning holders (35° lead angle, negative rake).
• Swiss-type lathe work: Use the dedicated Swiss tool block with V-pocket. Most Citizen, Star, and Tsugami Swiss lathes have V-pocket tool blocks.
