About 35° Diamond Inserts (V-Style)

The ISO 1832 V-shape family delivers a 35° included-angle cutting edge — the sharpest profile geometry in turning, with the smallest nose radius and the most acute lead angle. Mitsubishi's 35° lineup covers two clearance variants:

  • VB (5° positive rake) — Very sharp, low cutting force. Used for profiling, copy turning, and small-diameter finishing on Swiss-type lathes. Common in medical (bone screws, dental implants) and electronics (connector pins) machining.
  • VC (7° negative rake) — Slightly stronger than VB while still sharper than 80° CC / 90° SN. VCMT is the workhorse 35° negative insert, popular for stainless steel profiling and small-form-factor turning.

Both VB and VC ship in the same chip-breaker class — M (chip-breaker on both faces, double-edged economy) — with one variant using G (one face chip-breaker, sharp edge) for finish-grade profiling. The 35° geometry is the most demanding turning geometry to grind, but offers the best surface finish on small-diameter and complex-profile work.

Bottom line: Pick VB (35° positive) for the most demanding profiling and copy turning work — sharpest edge, best surface finish, but limited to non-interrupted cuts. Pick VC (35° negative) when you need 35° geometry with stronger edge for stainless profiling with light interruptions. For general turning where edge strength matters more than sharpness, step up to CCMT (80°) or CNMG (square).

How to Choose the Right 35° Diamond Insert — 3-Step

Step 1 — Identify the Operation

  • Profiling / copy turning (non-interrupted): Choose VB-class (VBGT, VBMT). Positive 5° rake and sharp edge give the best surface finish on complex contours.
  • Stainless profiling with light interruptions: Choose VCMT. Negative 7° rake + T tolerance = stronger edge for tougher cuts.
  • Mirror finishing on steel: Choose VBGT with NX2525 cermet grade. The 35° positive + sharp ground periphery + cermet = mirror surface.

Step 2 — Match the Grade to Workpiece

  • Stainless steel 304/316: US735 (CVD stainless grade) or VP15TF (PVD universal). US735 for heavier profiling, VP15TF for finish.
  • Alloy steel / tool steel: UE6020 (CVD steel grade, P20-P30) for general profiling.
  • Mirror finishing: NX2525 cermet (P05-P15). Best surface but no interrupted cuts.
  • Universal (steel + stainless): VP15TF PVD Miracle Coat — the safest all-around choice.

Step 3 — Verify Holder Compatibility

  • VB (35° positive): Use SVJB-style positive turning holders (35° lead angle). Check your holder's lead angle — most Swiss-type lathes use 35° or 90°.
  • VC (35° negative): Use MVJN-style negative turning holders (35° lead angle, negative rake).
  • Swiss-type lathe work: Use the dedicated Swiss tool block with V-pocket. Most Citizen, Star, and Tsugami Swiss lathes have V-pocket tool blocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VB and VC 35° diamond inserts?
VB has 5° positive clearance (sharpest edge, lowest cutting force — used for profiling and copy turning on Swiss-type lathes). VC has 7° negative clearance (stronger edge — used when light interruptions occur or for stainless steel profiling). VB is for finish work; VC is for general profiling with more aggressive parameters.
Why does the collection only have VB and VC types but no VW / VP / VT?
VB and VC are the dominant 35° geometries — VW, VP, and VT variants are legacy or specialty (e.g., VT for threading) and not stocked. If you need a specific 35° variant not in stock (VBMW, VCMW, VCMX, VBMW-H, etc.), please request a quote — we can source on-demand within 5-7 days from our OEM partners.
What is the difference between VBGT and VBMT?
VBGT uses G-tolerance (ground periphery, ±0.025 mm — sharper edge, premium for finishing). VBMT uses T-tolerance (standard, ±0.05 mm — more economical, suitable for general profiling). VBGT is typically used with NX2525 cermet for mirror finishing; VBMT is the workhorse for general stainless profiling.
Which 35° insert is best for stainless steel 304/316 profiling?
For 304/316 stainless profiling, we recommend VBMT160404-MV US735 as the primary choice — the positive 5° rake with MV chip-breaker gives low cutting force and excellent chip control on stainless. For heavier profiling with light interruptions, choose VCMT160408 US735 (negative rake, more edge strength). Both use the US735 grade which is specifically formulated for austenitic stainless with built-up edge resistance.
Can I use 35° diamond inserts on a standard CNC lathe, or only Swiss-type lathes?
35° diamond inserts work on any CNC lathe — they are not limited to Swiss-type lathes. However, they are most popular on Swiss-type lathes because the 35° geometry matches the typical Swiss tool block lead angle. On a standard 2-axis CNC lathe, you would use an SVJB or MVJN holder with 35° lead angle. For general profiling on a standard lathe, 55° DC or 80° CC is often more practical due to wider geometry selection.
What is the smallest and largest 35° diamond insert you stock?
Smallest: VBGT110302L-F (11.0 mm IC, 0.2 mm nose radius — for very fine profiling). Largest: VBMT160404-MV and VCMT160408 (16.0 mm IC, 0.4-0.8 mm nose radius — for heavy profiling of small-diameter parts). The 35° geometry is limited to small IC sizes (typically 6-16 mm) due to the geometry's grinding complexity.
