Sea Freight Quote: LCL vs FCL

For shipments over 100 kg or 1 CBM, sea is 60-80% cheaper than air. LCL (Less-than-Container-Load) for small cargo, FCL 20'/40' for full containers.

How We Calculate Freight Costs

Air express carriers charge by chargeable weight, which is the greater of:

  • Actual weight — what the scale says (kg).
  • Volumetric weight — (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000. For CNC inserts (small but heavy per unit), actual usually wins. For empty boxes or foam, volumetric can be higher.

For example, a 30×20×15 cm box of inserts weighing 5 kg actual: volumetric = 9000 ÷ 5000 = 1.8 kg. Chargeable = 5 kg. The 5 kg rate applies.

DHL vs FedEx vs UPS vs Yanwen Special Line Tracking: How They Differ

All four options go through 燕文 (Ningbo Yanwen) 4PL aggregator with negotiated rates. 燕文专线追踪 is the cheapest for most countries; DHL/FedEx/UPS are 10-30% more but faster with full door-to-door tracking.

Carrier Service Transit Best for Tracking Customs
Yanwen Special Line Tracking Tracked line 7-15 days Global, 50+ countries, cheapest Full door-to-door Included
DHL Express Worldwide  3-5 days US, EU, urgent Excellent Included
FedEx IP International Priority 3-5 days Americas, Asia Excellent Included
UPS Saver Express Saver (via ) 3-5 days US-domestic + Europe Good Included
Sea LCL Less-than-Container 25-40 days 1-12 CBM, 200+ kg Port-to-port Importer handles
Sea FCL 20' Full 20' container (28 CBM) 20-30 days 15-28 CBM bulk Container # Importer handles
Sea FCL 40' HQ High-cube 40' (68 CBM) 20-30 days 30-68 CBM bulk Container # Importer handles

Express vs Sea Break-Even

The rule of thumb: switch from air to sea when total weight exceeds 100 kg (or 1 CBM). Below that, air is competitive. Above that, sea saves 60-80%.

  • 5 kg to US: Air ~$95, Sea LCL ~$80-100 (savings minimal, choose air for speed)
  • 50 kg to US: Air ~$450, Sea LCL ~$300-400 (sea saves ~$100-150)
  • 200 kg to US: Air ~$1,800, Sea LCL ~$600-800, FCL 20' $2,500 (sea dramatically cheaper)
  • 1,000 kg to US: Air ~$9,000, FCL 20' $2,500 (sea saves 70%+)

Why CNC Tool Customers Choose Air

  1. Low weight per shipment. A typical 5 kg order fits one box. Air is the only economical option.
  2. Urgent production. A $50 express upgrade beats a $5,000/day downtime cost.
  3. Sample / trial orders. First-time buyers want 1-2 days, not 30.
  4. High-value density. Inserts cost $5-50/pc. Shipping 5 kg of CNMG ≈ $1,500 in goods. The freight ($95) is 6% — not worth optimizing.

Why They Switch to Sea

  1. Repeat orders 200+ kg. Once you're restocking quarterly, sea saves $1,000+ per shipment.
  2. New product launch. Big initial order, then air for replenishment.
  3. Distributor / warehouse restocking. Holding 1,000+ kg at port, sea's transit time is fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does air express from China to US take?
DHL Express, FedEx IP, and UPS Saver all deliver in 3-5 business days from Hangzhou to most US zip codes. Remote areas (Alaska, Hawaii) may add 1-2 days. Customs clearance is included in the transit time for shipments under $800 de minimis.
Which is cheapest: DHL, FedEx, UPS, or Yanwen Special Line Tracking?
Yanwen Special Line Tracking is typically 10-30% cheaper than the big 3. For 5 kg from China to US: Yanwen Special Line Tracking ~$84, UPS ~$100, FedEx ~$101, DHL ~$131. For Japan: Yanwen Special Line Tracking is dramatically cheaper at ~$17 for 5 kg (vs $50+ for DHL/FedEx). Trade-off: 燕文 is 7-15 days transit, DHL/FedEx/UPS are 3-5 days.
What's the de minimis threshold for US import duties?
$800 per shipment / per recipient / per day (Section 321). Below this, no formal entry, no duty, no HST/MFN. Most sample orders qualify. For full orders 200+ kg, expect formal entry with HS-coded commercial invoice and possible duty.
Can I ship under $800 de minimis for production orders?
Technically yes, but US Customs scrutinizes repeat shipments to the same recipient — Section 321 is meant for casual/low-value imports, not ongoing business. For repeated orders, do formal entry with proper commercial invoice. We provide FTA-ready paperwork.
Is volumetric weight always divided by 5000?
For international air express, yes — 5000 is the standard IATA divisor. Some carriers use 6000 for domestic US, but for China-origin international, always 5000. For sea LCL, the divisor doesn't apply (LCL is by CBM, not weight).
What's the cheapest way to ship 100 kg of carbide inserts?
Sea LCL if 100 kg fits in 1 CBM (very likely for inserts). Cost: ~$150-300 to US West Coast, transit 25-35 days. Air for 100 kg: $900-1,200, transit 3-5 days. Sea saves ~$700-900 if you can wait.
