Trapezoidal (Tr) vs ACME — ISO vs ANSI Standard
Both Trapezoidal and ACME threads are 30° / 30° symmetric power transmission threads for lead screws, machine slides, and clamps. The two standards differ in size designation, tolerances, and pitch range.
| Property | ISO Trapezoidal (Tr) | ANSI ACME |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ISO 2908 / DIN 103 | ANSI B1.1 / B1.3 |
| Size designation | Tr8×1.5, Tr10×2, Tr16×4, Tr20×4… | 3/4-6, 1/2-10, 1-8, 1.5-6… |
| Profile angle | 30° symmetric | 29° symmetric (slight asymmetry for clearance) |
| Tolerances | e7 (external) / 7H (internal) | Class 2G / 3G |
| Common sizes (BEYOND) | Tr13–Tr36 (full size range) | 1/2-10, 3/4-6 (on request) |
Trapezoidal threads are more common globally (ISO standard, used in EU/CN machinery). ACME is the US equivalent (ANSI standard, used in NA machinery). Both are interchangeable for functional lead screw applications.
HSS-Co (5% Cobalt) — Why It Matters for Tr / ACME
Trapezoidal / ACME taps work under extreme torque loads due to the deep, coarse thread profile. Standard HSS (M2) or HSS-E (M35, 5% Cobalt) tap materials may chip or break on tough alloy steels. The BEYOND T-Type taps use premium 5% Cobalt HSS-Co (HSS-E) for hot hardness up to 600°C.
| Property | HSS-Co 5% (this series) | Standard HSS (M2) |
|---|---|---|
| Hot hardness (600°C) | HRC 60+ | HRC 50 (softens) |
| Alloy steel suitability | Excellent (≤ HRC40) | Limited (chipping on tool steel) |
| Stainless steel | Good (work-hardening resistance) | Poor (rapid wear) |
| Optional TiN coating | Yes (multi-layer) | No (only oxide) |
Cutting Parameter Quick Guide
Tapping is a low-speed operation. Use a tapping head or tension/compression holder for synchronized feed. Use cutting fluid (cutting oil preferred for steel/stainless; kerosene for aluminum).
| Material | Hardness | Vc (m/min) | Tap Drill Ø | Lubricant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel (≤1500 N/mm²) | HRC40 | 8–15 | Tr Ø × 0.55 | Cutting oil |
| Alloy Steel / Tool Steel | HRC30 | 5–10 | Tr Ø × 0.50 | Sulfurized cutting oil |
| Stainless Steel (SUS304/316) | HRC40 | 5–10 | Tr Ø × 0.55 | Sulfurized cutting oil |
| Aluminum / Copper / Alloy | HRC40 | 15–25 | Tr Ø × 0.55 | Kerosene or MQL |
| Cast Iron | HRC40 | 10–18 | Tr Ø × 0.55 | Dry or MQL |

T-Type Tap vs Other Tooling Families
A T-Type tap is a thread-cutting tool, not a hole-making tool. For hole making, see the HRC60 3D / 5D / 8D carbide drill family. For center holes (lathe setup), see the center drill family. All siblings share the same /collections/drill parent hub.
SP Insert Drills — 55° positive trigon (stainless / aluminum / mild steel)
WC Insert Drills — 80° trigon negative rake (steel / cast iron / high MRR)
Application Spotlight
CNC Lead Screw Conversion
Convert a manual milling machine to CNC by replacing the Acme-threaded screws with T-Type lead screws. Trapezoidal threads have less backlash than Acme.
3D Printer / Linear Actuator
DIY 3D printer Z-axis or hobby linear actuator using Tr8×1.5 or Tr10×2 lead screw. Pair with bronze or polymer nut for low-friction motion.
Lathe Lead Screw Repair
Re-cut worn or damaged lead screws on old engine lathes. The 60° ACME / 30° Tr profile is the standard for lathe power feed.
Clamp & Vise Mechanism
Heavy-duty clamping mechanisms (machine vises, fixture clamps) using Trapezoidal threads for high load capacity with low wear.
Press Tooling
Stamping press adjustments, die set screws, and injection mold clamp rings — all standard Trapezoidal / ACME applications.
Educational Projects
Mechanical engineering student projects, robotics lead screws, hobby linear motion — Trapezoidal threads are the standard textbook example.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between ISO Trapezoidal (Tr) and ANSI ACME?
Both are 30° symmetric power transmission threads. ISO Trapezoidal (Tr) is the global standard (ISO 2908 / DIN 103), designated Tr Ø × pitch (e.g., Tr20×4). ANSI ACME is the US standard (ANSI B1.1), designated diameter-tpi (e.g., 3/4-6). They are functionally interchangeable for lead screw applications. The BEYOND T-Type series covers Tr13–Tr36; ACME sizes (1/2-10, 3/4-6) available on request.
Why HSS-Co (5% Cobalt) for Trapezoidal taps?
Trapezoidal / ACME taps work under extreme torque loads due to the deep, coarse thread profile. Standard HSS (M2) softens above 550°C — it can't sustain the heat of cutting deep Trapezoidal threads in tough alloy steels. 5% Cobalt HSS-Co (HSS-E) maintains HRC 60+ hardness at 600°C, preventing chipping and breakage on tough materials.
What tap drill size for Trapezoidal threads?
The tap drill (core hole) diameter is approximately Tr Ø × 0.55 for soft materials (aluminum, mild steel) and Tr Ø × 0.50 for harder materials (alloy steel, tool steel). For Tr20×4, use tap drill Ø 11.0 mm (steel) or 11.4 mm (aluminum). For Tr36×6, use tap drill Ø 19.8 mm. See the carbide drill family for suitable tap drills.
