The Original Korloy SCMT120404-HMP NC3020 is a heavy-duty Square (7° Positive) Turning Insert, specifically designed for high-precision Steel (P-Group) machining. Featuring the high-performance NC3020 CVD Grade, this insert provides exceptional heat resistance and durability for continuous high-speed cutting. The -HMP (Highly Medium Performer) chipbreaker is engineered to deliver superior chip control in semi-finishing operations, ensuring a mirror-like surface finish and minimizing the risk of chip-related damage to your workpiece.
Superior Precision in Large Parts: The 12mm size (SCMT1204) provides massive structural rigidity compared to smaller inserts. When paired with the HMP geometry, it allows machinists to achieve finish-quality tolerances even on large-diameter shafts and heavy industrial components.
Technical Specifications:

Core Performance Benefits:
- Thermal Stability: The multi-layer CVD coating (TiCN+Al2O3) enables the insert to maintain its edge at high surface speeds (Vc) without deformation.
- HMP Geometry Advantage: Balanced rake angle and chip groove design for perfect chip evacuation in medium-cut ranges (0.8mm - 3.0mm ap).
- Vibration Resistance: Despite its large size, the positive 7° clearance angle reduces cutting pressure, preventing chatter in long-reach boring operations.
- High Edge Consistency: NC3020 is designed for mass production, providing predictable tool life across hundreds of parts.
Recommended Cutting Parameters (Steel):
| Material Group | Cutting Speed (Vc) | Feed Rate (fn) | Depth of Cut (ap) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel (S45C) | 180 - 350 m/min | 0.12 - 0.35 mm/rev | 0.5 - 3.5 mm |
| Alloy Steel (4140) | 150 - 280 m/min | 0.10 - 0.30 mm/rev | 0.5 - 3.0 mm |
| Mild Steel (A36) | 200 - 400 m/min | 0.15 - 0.40 mm/rev | 1.0 - 4.0 mm |
Compatible Tool Holders:
Precision fit for standard 12.7mm (1/2") IC tool pockets:
- External Turning: SSDC 2020 / 2525 / 3232 Series
- Internal Boring: S25S-SSDC12 / S32T-SSDC12 / S40U-SSDC12
Machinist Tip: HMP vs. C25 Chipbreaker
How to choose the right geometry for your SCMT1204 inserts:
Finish & Control. The HMP is designed for lighter depths of cut. It produces a better surface finish and manages chips more reliably when you are closer to the final dimension.
Strength & Power. Use the -C25 geometry for raw material removal. It has a stronger edge land to survive heavy scale and larger depths of cut but may not produce as fine a finish as the HMP.
Pro Advice: When boring with SCMT120404-HMP, always ensure the chips are being flushed out with coolant. Since SCMT is a positive insert, it's excellent for reducing chatter in boring, but chip buildup in the hole can destroy the cutting edge instantly.
Packaging: 10 pieces per box.

Technical FAQ & Buying Guide
Absolutely. Our CNC carbide inserts (including CNMG, WNMG, DNMG, and APMT series) are manufactured strictly adhering to international ISO/ANSI specifications. A CNMG 120408 from OYYU BEYOND will flawlessly fit any standard turning tool holder or indexable tool from major global brands like Sandvik Coromant, Kennametal, Iscar, Walter, or SECO, providing a highly cost-effective premium alternative without sacrificing tolerance or tool life.
We offer optimized CVD and PVD multi-layer coatings for different ISO material groups:
- For Carbon/Alloy Steel (ISO P): Choose our thick multi-layer CVD coated grades (e.g., Al2O3 + TiN). They provide exceptional crater wear resistance and thermal barriers during high-speed dry or wet roughing.
- For Stainless Steel (ISO M): Choose our nano-structured PVD coated grades with sharp, positive chipbreakers (like -TM or -MA). This combination prevents work hardening and effectively controls sticky chips.
The optimal cutting parameters vary depending on the workpiece hardness and operation type:
- For General Steel Turnings: Recommended cutting speed ($V_c$) ranges from 150 to 280 m/min, with a feed rate ($f$) of 0.15 to 0.45 mm/rev.
- For Stainless Steel Finishing: Recommended cutting speed ($V_c$) is 120 to 200 m/min, with a feed rate ($f$) of 0.10 to 0.25 mm/rev.Always adjust parameters based on early wear patterns: increase $V_c$ if built-up edge occurs, or reduce $V_c$ if severe flank wear is observed.
