BEYOND BAP300R + BAP400R 90° Corn Milling Cutters | Wave Edge
BEYOND indexable corn-tooth face mill cutter bodies. BAP300R + BAP400R series with wave-edge geometry for chatter-free 90° square-shoulder milling on steel, alloy, and mold work.
The BEYOND corn milling cutter collection is a complete range of indexable 90° face mill cutter bodies built around the wave-edge (corn-tooth) insert pocket. Two families share the same BAP pocket geometry: BAP300R for medium-duty 110-150mm face mills using APMT 1135 inserts, and BAP400R for heavy-duty 45-220mm face mills + corner milling using APMT 1604 inserts. Both series use cylindrical C-shanks (C20 / C25 / C27 / C32 / C40 / C50) that fit standard CNC milling chucks and hydraulic holders, and both accept any ISO 1832 standard APMT-style insert from the global insert catalog.
Corn-tooth (wave-edge) geometry is the key to this collection's performance: the wave pattern breaks chips into small uniform segments that evacuate cleanly, eliminates chatter on long-reach cuts, and lets you push 2-3x higher material removal rate than a standard straight-edge face mill. The same cutter body can run square shoulder, face, side, and corner milling by simply changing insert geometry and orientation. This collection is part of the broader BEYOND tool holder family and pairs naturally with the Milling Shank Series for cylindrical-shank work and the Milling Cutter Disc arbor-mount face mill bodies.
2 Series Family Overview
| Series | Insert | Count | Shank | Cutting Ø | Teeth | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BAP300R | APMT 1135 (6.35 mm IC) | 8 | C20 / C25 / C32 | 110-150 mm | 2T / 3T | Medium-duty 90° face mill, slot milling, square shoulder on steel / alloy / cast iron |
| BAP400R | APMT 1604 (9.525 mm IC) | 19 | C32 (Ø 22 / 27 / 32 / 40 / 50 mm) | 45-220 mm | 2T / 3T / 4T / 5T / 6T | Heavy-duty 90° face mill, high-feed face milling, wave-edge corner milling, large surface area |
All BEYOND BAP400R wave-edge corner milling cutters are direct dimensional equivalents to industry-standard Mitsubishi and Korloy BAP400R holders, so you can swap inserts across brands without retooling.

Wave Edge / Corn Tooth Geometry Explained
The corn-tooth (wave-edge) insert pocket is the signature feature of this collection. Unlike a standard straight-edge face mill where each insert sees a uniform chip thickness, the wave-edge pattern varies the effective cutting depth along the cutting edge, which has three benefits:
- Smaller, more uniform chips — chips break at lower thickness and evacuate cleanly without re-cutting. This is critical when milling deep slots or machining stringy low-carbon steel.
- Lower chatter tendency — the wave pattern varies the cutting force frequency, which breaks up the harmonic resonance that causes chatter on long-reach cuts. You can run 2-3x higher feed per tooth without vibration.
- Higher material removal rate (MRR) — wave-edge inserts let you push higher feed rates while keeping cutting forces in the same envelope as a straight-edge cutter. The pocket geometry matches standard APMT 1135 / APMT 1604 inserts, so wave-edge holders are drop-in compatible with any ISO 1832 standard insert you already stock from the grade cross-reference hub.
For general carbide insert selection by material (steel / stainless / cast iron / aluminum), see the insert-by-material pillar. For operation-based selection (roughing / finishing / high-feed), see the insert-by-operation pillar.
APMT 1135 vs APMT 1604 Insert Family
Both insert families follow the ISO 1832 standard 90° positive trigon geometry — they differ only in IC (inscribed circle) size. Choose by cutting diameter:
| Insert | IC | Series | Typical Cutting Ø | Max DOC (ap) | Common Grades |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| APMT 1135 | 6.35 mm | BAP300R | 110-150 mm | 3.5 mm | APMT 1135-PN, APMT 1135-PM, APGT 1135-PN (aluminum) |
| APMT 1604 | 9.525 mm | BAP400R | 45-220 mm | 4.0 mm | APMT 1604-PN, APMT 1604-PM, APKT 1604, AOMT 1604-PN |
Common cross-brand equivalents: Mitsubishi APMT 1135 / APKT 1604 original inserts fit BEYOND BAP pockets directly. For grade selection help see the 8-brand grade cross-reference — BEYOND, Korloy, Mitsubishi, Kyocera, Sandvik, Sumitomo, Tungaloy, Walter.

FAQ — Corn Milling Cutter Selection
What is a corn milling cutter and how is it different from a standard face mill?
A corn milling cutter (also called a wave-edge face mill) has an insert pocket pattern where the cutting edge follows a wave or "corn row" shape. This breaks chips into smaller uniform segments, reduces chatter, and lets you run 2-3x higher feed per tooth. Standard face mills have straight cutting edges and lower MRR. The BEYOND BAP400R series is the corn-tooth line; the BAP300R is a straight-edge companion in the same 90° geometry family.
Can I use Mitsubishi or Korloy APMT inserts in BEYOND BAP300R / BAP400R holders?
Yes. Both BEYOND BAP300R and BAP400R pockets follow the standard ISO 1832 90° positive trigon geometry (APMT 1135 for BAP300R, APMT 1604 for BAP400R). Mitsubishi APKT 1604, Korloy APMT 1604-PN, and any other brand's APMT-class insert will fit. The only check needed is IC size (6.35mm vs 9.525mm) and matching shim if you switch insert thickness.
What cutting diameter should I use for a typical 90° face milling job?
General guidance: choose a cutter body Ø that is 1.2-1.5x the width of the cut. For example, a 50mm wide pocket on steel uses a 63-80mm BAP400R; a 100mm wide face on a large part uses a 130-150mm BAP300R. Larger diameters mean higher tooth counts (more chips per revolution = better surface finish) but require more horsepower and rigid spindle. For more, see the Speeds & Feeds hub.
Why does BAP400R have so many teeth options (2T-6T) and how do I choose?
Tooth count depends on cutting diameter and material. Coarse pitch (2T-3T) is best for steel and roughing at high MRR. Fine pitch (4T-6T) gives better surface finish on aluminum and finishing passes. General rule: 2T-3T for Ø 100-220mm steel; 3T-4T for Ø 63-100mm steel; 4T-6T for Ø 45-80mm aluminum or finishing. The same insert fits all tooth counts — only the cutter body changes.
Do I need a different shank for BAP300R vs BAP400R?
Yes — the shank diameter is tied to the cutter body, not the insert. BAP300R uses C20 / C25 / C32 cylindrical shanks (light to medium). BAP400R uses C32 with necked-down shank portions (22 / 27 / 32 / 40 / 50 mm) to balance rigidity vs clearance. Use the largest shank your spindle can take to maximize rigidity and chatter resistance.
What holder accessories do I need to maintain a corn milling cutter?
Every BAP300R / BAP400R body needs: (1) replacement APMT 1135 or 1604 inserts, (2) insert screws (M2.5 for APMT 1135, M4 for APMT 1604), (3) T8 / T15 Torx drivers, and (4) the matching carbide shim if you swap insert thickness. All consumables are in the Holder Accessories collection. For tool holder selection help, see the Tool Holder Guide.
