BEYOND ER Spring Collets + Collet Chucks | DIN 6499 / ISO 15488
BEYOND ER-series spring collets + collet chuck holders to DIN 6499 / ISO 15488. 6 sizes (ER8-ER32), 1-20mm clamping, AAA grade 0.005mm TIR precision.
The BEYOND ER chuck collection is a complete ER collet + collet chuck holder system for small-diameter precision tool holding on CNC milling, drilling, boring, and engraving machines. ER collets are the most widely-used spring collet standard worldwide, defined by DIN 6499 / ISO 15488, and BEYOND collets are fully interchangeable with any DIN 6499 holder — BT, CAT, HSK, NT, R8, MT, and straight-shank chucks all accept the same ER collet geometry. Six ER sizes (ER8 / ER11 / ER16 / ER20 / ER25 / ER32) cover clamping diameters from 1mm to 20mm in 0.5mm or 1mm increments, plus 1/8" (3.175mm) imperial cross-reference for imported tooling.
ER collets are the workhorse of any CNC shop because they grip round shank tools (drill bits, end mills, taps, reamers, engraving bits) symmetrically around the full 360° of the shank with high radial force. BEYOND's AAA grade ER collets use manganese-titanium spring steel with heat treatment to 0.005mm TIR (Total Indicated Runout) — tight enough for high-speed aluminum machining, precision boring, and micro-engraving. AA grade collets (0.008mm TIR) are the everyday standard for general CNC milling. This collection pairs naturally with the Milling Shank Series for cylindrical-shank indexable work, the 12D Saber Tooth Drill for deep-hole drilling, and the Rough & Fine Boring for internal turning. For broader tool holder selection, see the Tool Holder Guide.
6 ER Collet Size Reference
Each ER size is defined by the outer diameter of the collet nut and the clamping range. Bigger ER size = wider clamping range and stronger grip, but bigger collet body. Choose based on your largest tool shank:
| ER Size | Clamping Range | Typical Tools | Spindle / Holder | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ER8 | 1-5 mm | Micro drill, micro end mill, engraving bit | BT30 / HSK-A40 small spindle | Micro-engraving, jewelry, dental, electronics |
| ER11 | 1-7 mm | Small drill, engraving bit, micro end mill | BT30 / HSK-A50 small CNC | Small PCB, watch, mold detail work |
| ER16 | 1-10 mm | Standard small drill, small end mill | BT30 / BT40 / CAT40 | Standard CNC milling, light engraving |
| ER20 | 1-13 mm | Standard end mill, drill, tap | BT40 / CAT40 / HSK-A63 | Most common — general purpose CNC |
| ER25 | 1-16 mm | Medium end mill, drill, face mill | BT40 / CAT40 / HSK-A63 / HSK-A100 | Medium CNC, light face mill, medium drill |
| ER32 | 2-20 mm | Large end mill, large drill, face mill | BT40 / CAT50 / HSK-A100 | Heavy CNC milling, large drill, face mill body |
For tools beyond 20mm shank, use hydraulic chucks or shrink-fit holders (not in this collection). For end mill holders vs ER collet trade-offs, see FAQ below.
Grade Comparison (AAA / AA / Standard)
BEYOND offers three precision grades. Pick by spindle speed and tolerance need:
| Grade | TIR | Material | Use Case | Speed Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AAA | 0.005 mm | Manganese-Titanium Steel (Mn-Ti) | Heavy-duty CNC, high-speed spindle (15,000+ RPM), precision boring, micro-engraving | 40,000 RPM |
| AA | 0.008 mm | Alloy Spring Steel | Standard CNC milling, drilling, general purpose, small end mills | 30,000 RPM |
| Standard | 0.010-0.015 mm | Standard Spring Steel | Light-duty, low-cost replacement, low-RPM drill press work | 15,000 RPM |
For 0.005mm TIR, BEYOND AAA grade matches or exceeds the runout accuracy of major Japanese / German collet brands at a fraction of the OEM price. For grade selection by material, see the insert-by-material pillar; for operation-based selection, see the insert-by-operation pillar.
ER Collet Chuck Holder Types
An ER collet on its own needs a chuck holder (nut + body) to mount on the machine spindle. BEYOND offers three ER25 chuck holder styles, each with different rigidity / price trade-off:
| Chuck Type | Count | Clamping | Runout | Rigidity | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ER Spring Collet Chuck | 3 | 1-16 mm | 0.01 mm | Medium | Standard CNC milling, all-purpose |
| ER Elastic Collet Chuck | 3 | 1-16 mm | 0.005 mm | High | High-rigidity precision milling, finishing |
| ER Collet Chuck (Standard) | 2 | 1-16 mm | 0.015 mm | Medium-Low | Light-duty, low-cost, drill press work |
For maximum rigidity at high RPM, the ER Elastic Collet Chuck uses a slotted elastic body that grips the tool shank with 4-point contact, achieving hydraulic-chuck-level runout (0.005mm) at ER collet cost. The ER Spring Collet Chuck is the everyday standard for general CNC. For spindle taper options (BT30 / BT40 / CAT40 / CAT50 / HSK-A63 / HSK-A100), see the Tool Holder Guide.
Clamping Diameter + Imperial Cross-Reference
All BEYOND ER collets come in metric clamping diameters with 0.5mm or 1mm increment. For imperial tooling, the 1/8" (3.175mm) ER11 collet is the standard cross-reference:
| Metric Ø | Imperial Equivalent | ER Sizes Available | Step |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mm | 0.039" | ER8, ER11, ER16, ER20, ER25 | Smallest standard collet |
| 2 mm | 0.079" | ER8, ER11, ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 | Micro-drill standard |
| 3 mm | 0.118" | ER11, ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 | Standard micro end mill |
| 3.175 mm | 1/8" | ER11 (1/8" imperial) | Imported tooling cross-reference |
| 4 mm | 5/32" | ER11, ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 | Standard small end mill |
| 6 mm | 15/64" | ER11, ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 | Standard end mill |
| 8 mm | 5/16" | ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 | Standard end mill |
| 10 mm | 25/64" | ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32 | Medium end mill |
| 12 mm | 15/32" | ER20, ER25, ER32 | Medium-large end mill |
| 16 mm | 5/8" | ER25, ER32 | Large end mill |
| 20 mm | 25/32" | ER32 | Largest standard collet |
For drill sizes not in the standard 0.5mm increment (e.g. 4.2mm, 6.8mm, 8.5mm), BEYOND offers fractional clamping collets on request. For tap holders and reamer holders (which need square drive), use dedicated tap / re ER collets rather than the standard round clamping series in this collection.

FAQ — ER Collet Selection
What is the difference between an ER collet and a hydraulic or shrink-fit chuck?
ER collets use a slotted spring-steel body that clamps the tool shank via a tapered nut. They are the most versatile and cost-effective standard, with 0.005-0.015mm TIR depending on grade. Hydraulic chucks use hydraulic oil pressure to clamp the shank symmetrically, achieving 0.003mm TIR but require a smooth-ground shank and cost 3-5x more. Shrink-fit chucks use thermal expansion (heat to 300°C) to grip the shank with zero clearance, achieving 0.002mm TIR for high-speed / high-rigidity work but require a dedicated shrink-fit machine and only fit one shank size per chuck. For most CNC shops, ER collets are the workhorse; hydraulic and shrink-fit are used for specific high-rigidity / high-precision applications.
What is the difference between AA and AAA grade ER collets?
Both AA and AAA grade BEYOND ER collets follow the same DIN 6499 / ISO 15488 form. The difference is the spring steel alloy and heat treatment. AAA grade uses manganese-titanium steel with tighter heat-treatment tolerance, achieving 0.005mm TIR (Total Indicated Runout). AA grade uses alloy spring steel with 0.008mm TIR. AAA is preferred for high-speed spindles (15,000+ RPM), precision boring, and micro-engraving where runout directly affects surface finish. AA is fine for standard CNC milling, drilling, and general-purpose work below 15,000 RPM.
How do I choose the right ER size for my tool?
Pick the smallest ER collet that fits your tool shank — collets have wider clamping range than you'd expect, but smaller ER size means better concentricity and stronger grip. For a 6mm end mill, ER11 (1-7mm range) is acceptable, but ER16 (1-10mm) gives more consistent grip. For a 12mm end mill, use ER20 (1-13mm). For a 20mm tool, use ER32. The general rule: tool shank should be in the middle 2/3 of the collet's clamping range for best grip. For shanks less than 1mm, use ER8 with a 0.5mm increment collet.
Can I use imperial (1/8" / 3.175mm) collets in my ER chuck holder?
Yes — BEYOND ER11 collets are available in 3.175mm (1/8") imperial clamping as a standard SKU. The collet nut and body are identical; only the collet internal diameter changes. This is the most common imperial cross-reference for imported engraving bits, PCB drills, and Dremel-style tools. For other imperial sizes (1/16" = 1.588mm, 3/16" = 4.763mm), check the BEYOND ER11 / ER16 fractional series.
When should I use an ER collet vs an end mill holder?
ER collets are general-purpose and accept any round-shank tool (drill, end mill, tap, reamer, engraving bit) in a wide diameter range (1-20mm depending on ER size). End mill holders (also called Weldon chuck holders) have a setscrew that locks onto a flat ground on the tool shank — they give stronger gripping for heavy milling but only fit specific shank diameters. Use ER for flexibility and small-diameter tools; use end mill holder for heavy roughing on a fixed set of end mills. The BEYOND collection focuses on ER because it's the more versatile workhorse.
How long does an ER collet last and when should I replace it?
ER collet lifetime depends on usage — typically 1,000-5,000 clamping cycles before the slotted spring steel loses grip. Replace when you notice: (1) tool slippage during heavy cuts, (2) visible wear or chipping on the inside clamping surface, (3) inability to hold TIR within grade spec (0.005mm for AAA, 0.008mm for AA). Always clean the collet and tool shank before clamping; chips and debris dramatically reduce grip. Store collets in the original plastic sleeve to protect the slotted body from impact damage.
