BEYOND Indexable Drills With SP Inserts 2D | SP05 to SP14
BEYOND indexable U-drill bodies for 2D shallow hole drilling. SP-series 55° positive trigon inserts, cylindrical C20-C40 shank, 13-50mm cutting diameter, through-body internal coolant.
The BEYOND indexable drills with SP inserts 2D collection is a focused subset of the SP-series 2D indexable U-drill family, optimized for shallow plate drilling, cross-hole work, and flat drilling where the hole depth is no more than 2× the drill diameter. SP inserts are 55° positive trigon with sharp cutting edges and low cutting force — ideal for stainless steel, aluminum, low-carbon steel, and other materials where reduced cutting pressure and good chip flow matter more than maximum material removal rate. The 2D depth ratio keeps each drill short and rigid, with through-body internal coolant channels that evacuate chips cleanly at the cutting edge.
SP inserts are interchangeable with ISO 1832 standard equivalents from Korloy, Mitsubishi, and other major brands. For deeper drilling (3D, 4D, 5D), see the sibling BEYOND collections: 3D Carbide Drill, 4D Drill, 5D Drill. For the complete U-drill catalog (WC + SP series, 2D-5D depth), see the parent drill hub. | 38-50 mm | C40 | SP14 | Large industrial drilling, mold base, heavy equipment |
Internal Coolant for 2D Drilling
Even though 2D is shallow (max depth = 2× diameter), internal coolant is still recommended. The benefits at 2D depth ratio:
- Chip evacuation — coolant flushes chips up the flute away from the cutting edge, preventing chip packing that causes insert chipping
- Heat dissipation — coolant carries heat away from the insert, extending tool life especially in stainless steel and aluminum
- Surface finish — coolant improves chip flow and reduces re-cutting, giving better hole wall finish
For 2D drilling, coolant pressure of 7-15 bar (100-220 PSI) is sufficient. For deeper 3D/4D/5D ratios, higher pressure is mandatory. For spindle selection and coolant system sizing, see the Speeds & Feeds hub.

FAQ — SP-Series 2D Indexable Drill
What is the difference between SP and WC insert series?
SP is a 55° positive trigon insert family with positive rake, sharp cutting edges, and low cutting force — preferred for stainless steel, aluminum, low-carbon steel, and thin plate work where reduced cutting pressure and good chip flow matter. WC is an 80° trigon (negative rake) insert family with strong cutting edges for steel, alloy steel, and cast iron at high material removal rate. Both are indexable U-drill standards. For 2D shallow drilling on stainless / aluminum, SP is the better choice. For deep drilling (3D+) on steel, WC is typically preferred.
Why choose 2D depth ratio over 3D/4D/5D?
2D depth ratio is the simplest, most rigid, and most forgiving drill geometry. It works for shallow plate drilling, cross-holes, and flat drilling where the hole depth is no more than 2× the drill diameter. The short drill body has excellent rigidity, lower chip evacuation demands, and lower coolant pressure requirements (7-15 bar). For deeper holes, choose 3D / 4D / 5D ratios — but those require higher coolant pressure, more rigid setups, and have more chip evacuation risk. Pick the smallest depth ratio that fits your deepest hole.
Do all SP 2D drill bodies have internal coolant?
Yes. All BEYOND SP 2D indexable U-drill bodies in this collection (C20 / C25 / C32 / C40 shanks) have through-body internal coolant channels that run from the shank end to the insert pocket. Coolant exits under pressure at the cutting edge, evacuating chips from the flutes. For 2D drilling, coolant pressure of 7-15 bar (100-220 PSI) is sufficient. For 3D / 4D / 5D deeper drilling, higher pressure is mandatory.
Can I use Korloy or Mitsubishi SPGT / SPMT inserts in BEYOND SP 2D drill bodies?
Yes. All BEYOND SP 2D drill bodies follow ISO 1832 standard for SPGT (positive trigon ground) and SPMT (positive trigon molded) inserts. Cross-brand equivalents from Korloy, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, and Sandvik will fit the same pocket. The only check needed is IC size (5.0 / 6.0 / 7.0 / 9.0 / 14.0 mm) and matching insert thickness. For grade selection, see the 8-brand grade cross-reference.
How do I match shank size to drill body diameter?
General rule: shank diameter should be at least 70-80% of the cutting diameter for rigidity without over-stressing the spindle. For 13-19mm drill, use C20 shank (9 SKUs). For 18-30mm drill, use C25 shank (16 SKUs). For 26-37mm drill, use C32 shank (17 SKUs). For 38-50mm drill, use C40 shank (23 SKUs). Bigger shank = more rigid setup but heavier spindle load. The full shank × insert cross-reference is in the table above.
What's the difference between SPGT and SPMT inserts?
SPGT inserts are precision-ground (tolerances ±0.025mm) — preferred for high-precision drilling where hole tolerance and surface finish matter. SPMT inserts are precision-molded (tolerances ±0.13mm) — lower cost, suitable for general production drilling. Both share the same 55° positive trigon geometry. For grade selection, see the 8-brand grade cross-reference. For material-based selection, see the insert-by-material pillar.
