How to Choose a Kyocera Negative Insert

Step 1: Match the geometry to operation. For 80% of steel turning applications, choose CNMG (80° diamond, double-sided, 4 cutting edges per insert). For hardened steel (HRC 55+) high-speed cutting, choose CNGA (ceramic, no chip-breaker, sharper edge). For precision finishing with cermet, choose CNGG. For 60° triangle approach angles, choose TNGA.

Step 2: Match the grade to material. Steel → CA6525 (workhorse) or CA5525 (finishing). Stainless/high-temp → PR1125. Hardened steel → PR1535 or A65/A66N ceramic. Cast iron → CA6525 or CQ chip-breaker. Aluminum → PV720. Precision steel finishing → TN60 cermet.

Step 3: Match the chip-breaker to depth of cut. Light finishing (0.3-1.5mm) → PP, PS, GP. Medium (1.5-4mm) → MQ, MU, GT. Heavy (3-8mm) → HQ, HS, TK. Use the table above to find the right combination.

Step 4: Match the holder. Kyocera CNMG fits the PCLNR/L, DCLNR/L, MCLNR/L, MWLNR/L tool holder families. CNGA ceramic fits the same holders. CNGG cermet fits the same. CNCHome-Beyond carries compatible aftermarket holders at 30-50% below OEM — see our turning tool holder guide and Insert Holder Selector.

Compatible Tool Holders

Kyocera negative inserts fit the following CNCHome-Beyond tool holder families (all ISO 5608 standard, drop-in compatible with Kyocera OEM holders):

Kyocera CNMG 1204 CA6525 Series — Steel Workhorse

The CNMG 120408 CA6525 with chip-breaker variants (HQ/HS/MQ/PS/MU) is the most popular Kyocera turning insert for steel. CA6525 MEGACOAT grade handles P10-P30 steel at 120-220 m/min. The 12mm IC double-sided insert gives 4 cutting edges per insert.

Kyocera CNMG 1204 PR1125 Series — Stainless Steel Premium

The CNMG 120408 PR1125 with MEGACOAT NANO coating is Kyocera's premium grade for stainless steel (M15-M30). PR1125 is the workhorse PVD grade for stainless, high-temp alloys, and titanium. The NANO coating has 1000+ sub-layers for exceptional wear resistance.

Kyocera TNGA Ceramic Series — High-Speed Hardened Steel

The TNGA 160408 A65 is a SiAlON ceramic insert designed for high-speed continuous cut of hardened steel (HRC 50+) at 200-400 m/min. 16mm IC, double-sided, 6 cutting edges. Best for hard turning in place of grinding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kyocera MEGACOAT coating technology?

MEGACOAT is Kyocera's proprietary coating family for carbide inserts. Standard MEGACOAT uses alternating layers of TiCN and Al2O3 for steel applications. MEGACOAT NANO adds 1000+ nano-scale sub-layers for stainless and high-temp alloys. MEGACOAT HARD is optimized for hardened steel up to HRC 65. The coating reduces wear, extends tool life, and allows higher cutting speeds than uncoated or TiN-coated inserts.

What is the difference between Kyocera CA6525 and CA5525?

CA6525 is the workhorse CVD grade for general purpose steel turning (P10-P30). It has a thicker Al2O3 layer for wear resistance in roughing. CA5525 is the lighter CVD grade for finishing (P05-P20) with a thinner coating and sharper cutting edge. Use CA6525 for the bulk of steel turning; use CA5525 for finishing and lighter cuts.

What is Kyocera PR1125 grade best for?

PR1125 is the workhorse PVD grade with MEGACOAT NANO coating. It is the best choice for stainless steel (M15-M30), high-temperature alloys, and titanium. The NANO coating handles the work-hardening tendency of stainless better than CVD grades. Use PR1125 with chip-breakers GS, MS, or MU for stainless applications.

What is the equivalent of Kyocera CNMG 120408 in other brands?

Kyocera CNMG 120408 is the industry-standard negative turning insert geometry (80° diamond, 12mm IC, 4 cutting edges, 0.8mm nose). Direct equivalents: Mitsubishi CNMG 120408 US7020, Sandvik CNMG 120408 GC4325, Kennametal CNMG 120408 KC7315, Iscar CNMG 120408 IC8150, Tungaloy CNMG 120408 T9125. All are dimensionally interchangeable on the same external turning tool holder. For grade cross-reference and detailed equivalent table, see our Insert Grade Cross-Reference Tool.

What is the difference between CNMG and CNGA inserts?

CNMG has a chip-breaker groove on both faces; CNGA has a flat (no chip-breaker) on both faces. CNGA is used for heavy roughing with strong cutting forces and is typically a ceramic grade (A65/A66N) for hardened steel high-speed cutting. CNMG is for general purpose with chip control. CNGA ceramic is preferred when you need maximum tool life at high speeds (200-400 m/min) on hardened steel; CNMG is preferred for variable conditions with chip control.

What is the minimum order quantity for Kyocera negative turning inserts?

Sample orders start at 1 piece for grade validation. Standard production orders are 10-50 pieces per item. Bulk pricing tiers: 2-9 pieces 6% off, 10+ pieces 12% off (auto-applied at checkout). For custom grades or chip-breakers not in our standard catalog, MOQ is 200 pieces with 6-8 week lead time from Kyocera Japan. See our warranty and return policy for details on grade validation samples.
