Indexable Boring Bars | Rough & Fine Boring Series | BEYOND
BEYOND boring tools for 2-stage precision boring: rough boring with TPMT 11° positive inserts + fine boring with TCMT/CCMT. Micro 4mm to 32mm shank range.
The BEYOND rough and fine boring series covers the full 2-stage precision boring workflow: rough boring removes the bulk material using strong TPMT 11° positive inserts at high material removal rate, and fine boring achieves final size and surface finish using TCMT 7° positive or CCMT 80° rhombic inserts at low radial depth of cut. Each boring bar uses a cylindrical shank (ENH micro 4-6mm, SB face-mill 16-32mm, GTB 25-32mm) that fits standard CNC milling chucks or boring head holders, and accepts replaceable carbide inserts following the ISO 1832 geometry standard.
This collection is part of the broader BEYOND tool holder family and works with any ISO 1832 standard insert. For dedicated boring bars with larger diameter range, see the Screw-Clamp Boring Bar and Double-Clamp Boring Bar series.

Rough Boring vs Fine Boring
Boring is typically done in 2 stages: rough boring for material removal, then fine boring for precision and surface finish. Each stage uses different inserts and parameters.
| Operation | Material Removal | Insert | Surface Finish | Tolerance | Feed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rough Boring | 0.5-2.0 mm radial DOC | TPMT 110304 (TP insert, 11° positive) | Ra 3.2-6.3 μm | ±0.05 mm | 0.05-0.15 mm/rev |
| Fine Boring | 0.05-0.2 mm radial DOC | TCMT 110204 (TC insert, 7° positive) or CCMT 060204/09T304 (80° diamond) | Ra 0.4-1.6 μm | ±0.005 mm | 0.02-0.08 mm/rev |
The TPMT 11° positive insert has a stronger cutting edge for high-feed rough boring. The TCMT 7° positive insert has a sharper edge and can use wiper geometry for fine surface finish. CCMT 80° diamond inserts are general-purpose and work for both rough and fine boring.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What's the difference between rough boring and fine boring?
Rough boring removes the bulk of the material in a pre-existing hole, using a strong insert (TPMT 11° positive) at high material removal rate (0.5-2mm radial depth of cut). Fine boring follows to achieve the final size and surface finish, using a sharper insert (TCMT 7° positive wiper or CCMT 80° diamond) at low radial depth of cut (0.05-0.2mm). Most precision boring applications use both stages — rough for speed, fine for tolerance and finish.
2. Can I use the same boring bar for both rough and fine boring?
Yes — the boring bar body is the same; only the insert changes. For example, an ENH6-3 boring bar can run TPMT 110304 for rough boring (high feed) and TCMT 110204 for fine boring (wiper edge). This is one of the major cost advantages of indexable boring bars — buy one bar and stock both insert types for the 2-stage process.
3. What is the minimum bore diameter for ENH micro-boring?
ENH4 (4mm shank) boring bars can bore down to 41mm diameter bore range (the body diameter is larger than the boring diameter because the bar needs clearance for chip evacuation). For boring smaller holes (under 40mm), use a different bar type — solid carbide boring bars or boring heads. The ENH series is designed for boring in the 40-150mm range, which is the most common precision boring application.
4. Can I use SB face-milling arbors for boring?
Yes — despite being in the "boring" collection, the SB series is technically a face-milling cutter arbor with CCMT 09T304 inserts. It's used for both face milling and boring-style operations on larger diameters (25-50mm). For dedicated boring, the GTB series is a more rigid choice because it's designed for boring with a cylindrical shank, not a face mill arbor.
5. What is the difference between TPMT and TCMT inserts?
TPMT is 11° positive triangle (TP INSERT) with a thick insert body and strong cutting edge, designed for rough boring at high material removal rate. TCMT is 7° positive triangle (TC INSERT) with a thinner, sharper edge, designed for fine boring and finishing with possible wiper geometry. Both fit the same triangular insert pocket, so you can swap them in the same boring bar for rough-fine sequence.
6. Can I get custom boring diameter or shank length?
Yes. BEYOND offers custom boring bar manufacturing for non-standard lengths or special shank diameters, with a 5-piece MOQ and 2-3 week lead time. Common custom requests include 200mm+ length for deep boring, or special shank sizes (3mm, 8mm, 10mm). Contact sales at chao@cnchome-beyond.com or WhatsApp +86 15990663752 for a custom quote.
