About Kyocera Threading Inserts

Kyocera threading inserts are precision ground carbide tools for external and internal thread turning on CNC lathes. They cover every major thread standard used in industry: ISO Metric (M), UN/UNF Unified, BSW Whitworth, BSP/BSPT British Standard Pipe, and partial profile 60° / 55° generic geometry. Every insert on this page is genuine OEM product from Kyocera Corporation (Japan, est. 1959), using the proprietary PR1115 PVD-coated grade and the precision TF chip-breaker. PR1115 is the industry benchmark for steel and stainless threading at 80-180 m/min.

CNCHome-Beyond is an authorized Kyocera distributor. Orders placed before 3 PM China time ship same-day from our Hangzhou warehouse with DHL/UPS/FedEx express delivery in 3-7 business days. Kyocera Threading Grade & Chip-Breaker

Code Type Coating Workpiece Best For
PR1115 PVD-coated carbide TiN-based PVD (yellow) Steel (P10-P25), stainless (M10-M20) Universal threading grade for 90% of applications
TF Chip-breaker geometry Sharp edge + chip control flute All thread pitches Single-pass threading on steel, stainless, and cast iron

Why PR1115 + TF for threading? Threading requires a sharp cutting edge for accurate thread profile, combined with a tough grade that resists chipping at the nose. PR1115 PVD coating provides the wear resistance for long tool life; the TF chip-breaker geometry has a sharp cutting edge with a small chip-control flute that breaks chips without sacrificing profile accuracy. This combination is the industry standard for general-purpose threading and is rated for thread pitch from 0.5 mm (50 TPI) up to 3.0 mm (8 TPI). Use our Speeds & Feeds Calculator for exact parameters per pitch and material.

External vs Internal Threading — How to Choose

External threading (ER) inserts mount on standard external tool holders (16ER = 16mm IC external right-hand). For left-hand external threads, use the EL designation (e.g. 16EL150ISO). Internal threading (IR) inserts mount on internal boring bars with a smaller shank (11IR = 11mm IC internal, fits small-diameter bores; 16IR = 16mm IC internal, fits larger bores).

Code Type IC Size Min Bore Diameter Holder
16ER / 16EL External right / left 16 mm N/A (external) External threading tool holder (16mm IC pocket)
16IR / 16IL Internal right / left 16 mm ~20 mm bore Internal boring bar (16mm IC pocket)
11IR / 11IL Internal right / left (small) 11 mm ~13-14 mm bore Small internal boring bar (11mm IC pocket)

How to Choose the Right Kyocera Threading Insert

Step 1: Identify the thread standard. ISO metric (M) for European/Asian metric fasteners. UN/UNF for North American inch fasteners. Whitworth (W/BSW) for UK legacy or vintage machinery. BSPT for tapered pipe threads.

Step 2: Look up the pitch or TPI. ISO metric pitch is in mm (e.g. M10×1.5 = 1.5 mm pitch). UN TPI is threads per inch (e.g. 1/2"-20 UNF = 20 TPI). Whitworth and BSPT are TPI as well.

Step 3: Choose the hand. External = ER (right-hand thread) or EL (left-hand thread). Internal = IR (right-hand) or IL (left-hand). Most applications are right-hand.

Step 4: Choose IC size. Use 16mm IC for OD > 25 mm or bore > 20 mm. Use 11mm IC for bore 13-20 mm only.

Step 5: For unknown pitch, use partial profile. A 60° partial profile insert (A60/G60/AG60) covers any pitch from 0.5-3.0 mm. A 55° partial profile insert (A55/G55/AG55) covers Whitworth/BSP pitch 0.5-3.0 mm. Trade-off: full profile is more accurate (matches standard exactly); partial profile is more flexible (one insert for many pitches).

ISO Metric (M) — 16 SKUs (16ER / 16IR / 11IR)

ISO Metric (M) threads are the international standard per ISO 261. 60° sharp V profile. Pitch range 0.5-3.0 mm. Use for metric fasteners, machine parts, and general engineering.

UN / UNF Unified — 14 SKUs (16ER / 16IR)

UN Unified threads are the North American standard per ANSI B1.1. 60° angle with flat root (UN) or root radius (UNF). TPI (threads per inch) range 8-24. Use for imperial fasteners, UNC/UNF bolts, and North American machinery.

W Whitworth (BSW) — 6 SKUs (16ER / 16IR)

Whitworth (BSW) threads are the British Standard per BS 84, with a 55° sharp V profile and rounded root. TPI range 11-19. Use for UK legacy machinery, vintage gas fittings, and British imperial fasteners.

BSPT Taper Pipe — 7 SKUs (16ER / 16IR / 11IR)

BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) is a 55° tapered thread per ISO 7, taper rate 1:16 (3/4" per foot). Used for pressure-tight pipe joints in hydraulics, steam, gas, and water systems. TPI range 11-28.

Partial Profile 60° — 3 SKUs (16ER)

Partial profile 60° inserts have a generic 60° V profile that covers multiple pitches within the same family. One insert can thread 0.5-3.0 mm pitch (ISO) or 8-24 TPI (UN). Trade-off: slightly less accurate profile than full-profile; big advantage: fewer SKUs to stock.

Partial Profile 55° — 3 SKUs (16ER)

Partial profile 55° inserts have a generic 55° V profile for Whitworth and BSP threads. One insert covers 0.5-3.0 mm pitch (BSW) or 8-24 TPI (BSP/BSPT). Same trade-off as 60° partial: fewer SKUs at the cost of slightly less accurate profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kyocera PR1115 grade best for in threading?

PR1115 is Kyocera's universal PVD-coated threading grade. It is rated for steel (P10-P25) and stainless (M10-M20) at 80-180 m/min. The TiN-based PVD coating provides wear resistance for long tool life; the sharp cutting edge is required for accurate thread profile. Use PR1115 for 90% of general threading applications. For hardened steel, switch to PR1125 (PR1125 is the tougher grade). For cast iron, an uncoated grade like T15A is preferred.

What is the difference between full profile and partial profile threading inserts?

Full profile inserts have a complete thread profile ground into the cutting edge. Each insert matches one specific pitch (e.g. 16ER150ISO matches M14×1.5 exactly). Result: more accurate thread, full thread depth achievable in one pass. Partial profile inserts have a generic V profile that covers multiple pitches (e.g. 16ERA60 covers any 60° pitch from 0.5-3.0 mm). Result: one insert for many pitches, but you may need 2-3 passes to achieve full thread depth, and the resulting profile is slightly less accurate than full profile. Use full profile for production runs and critical threads; use partial profile for repair, prototyping, or low-volume work where flexibility matters.

What is the difference between external (ER) and internal (IR) threading inserts?

External (ER) inserts mount on an external threading tool holder and cut threads on the outside of a workpiece (e.g. a bolt). Internal (IR) inserts mount on an internal boring bar and cut threads on the inside of a bore (e.g. a nut). The cutting edge geometry is mirrored: ER cuts from OD inward, IR cuts from bore wall outward. Internal inserts also need a smaller shank to fit inside the bore — hence 11mm IC (small) and 16mm IC (large) variants for different bore diameters.

What is the equivalent of Kyocera 16ER 150ISO in other brands?

Kyocera 16ER 150ISO PR1115 is the industry-standard external metric threading insert (16mm IC, 1.5mm pitch for M14). Direct equivalents: Sandvik R166.0G-16MM01-150, Kennametal KE16-150R/L, Iscar 16ER1.50ISO, Walter LT16-1.50ISO. All are dimensionally interchangeable on the same external threading holder. For grade cross-reference, see our Insert Grade Cross-Reference Tool.

What is BSPT vs NPT? Can I use a BSPT insert for NPT?

BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) uses a 55° thread angle and is the standard in UK, Europe, Asia, and most of the world outside North America. NPT (National Pipe Taper) uses a 60° thread angle and is the standard in North America. The two are NOT interchangeable. A BSPT insert will produce an undersized, leaking thread on an NPT fitting, and vice versa. We stock Kyocera BSPT inserts on this page. For NPT, you need a 60° partial profile insert (e.g. 16ERA60) cut to the NPT pitch. Contact us for NPT insert availability and lead time.

What is the minimum order quantity for Kyocera threading inserts?

Sample orders start at 1 piece for grade validation. Standard production orders are 10-50 pieces per item. Bulk pricing tiers: 2-9 pieces 6% off, 10+ pieces 12% off (auto-applied at checkout). For custom thread profiles or non-standard pitches not in our catalog, MOQ is 200 pieces with 6-8 week lead time from Kyocera Japan. See our warranty and return policy for details on grade validation samples.
