What is a “Positive” Turning Insert?

In the ISO 1832 insert designation system, the second letter indicates the clearance angle: “P” (11°), “G” (7°), or “M” (5°). All three mean the insert is single-sided, with the cutting edge only on the top face. Compared to negative (N, 0°, double-sided) inserts, positive inserts deliver:

  • Lower cutting forces — the positive rake face reduces radial force by 20-40%, ideal for slender shafts, thin-wall tubes, and small CNC Swiss-type lathes
  • Sharper cutting edge — single-sided geometry allows precision grinding to a razor edge, perfect for mirror-finish finishing on steel (NX2525 / AP25N cermet grades)
  • Better for aluminum & non-ferrous — the low cutting temperature of aluminum demands a sharp, uncoated edge (HTI10 K-class), which only positive inserts can provide without BUE
  • Faster indexing — only one side to flip, no shim required, changeout in 10 seconds vs 30 for negative

Trade-off: Positive inserts have only 2-4 cutting edges (vs 4-8 for negative) and a thinner body (2.38-4.76 mm vs 4.76-6.35 mm), making them less suitable for heavy roughing or interrupted cuts. For those applications, see our Mitsubishi negative turning inserts collection instead.

ISO Nomenclature Decoded (Positive Turning Example)

Take CCMT120408-FM VP15TF — the most popular Mitsubishi positive turning insert:

Code Meaning
C Shape: 80° square (rhombic) — the most common positive geometry for general turning
C Relief angle: 7° (positive, single-sided) — vs “N” which would mean 0° negative
M Tolerance class: medium (M-class) precision
T Type: hole + chip-breaker on top face only (single-sided)
12 Inscribed circle (IC) = 12.7 mm (1/2 inch)
04 Thickness = 4.76 mm (3/16 inch)
08 Nose radius = 0.8 mm (1/32 inch)
FM Chip-breaker: finishing-medium (sharp edge with light chip control)
VP15TF Grade: Mitsubishi PVD TiAlN (Miracle coat) universal P15-M25

For comparison, the negative equivalent is CNMG120408-MA UE6110 — notice the “N” vs “C” in position 2 (0° vs 7°), and the M-class M at position 3 (vs T for hole-and-chip-breaker on positive).

8 Major ISO Shape Families in Stock (32 Variants Total)

Mitsubishi’s positive turning insert lineup spans 8 main shape families with multiple tolerance variants (G = 7° precision / M = 7° with hole / E = 15° etc.), totaling 32 unique SKUs by shape. The most popular are listed first:

Top 8 Grades in Stock (14 Total)

Mitsubishi’s positive turning grade portfolio mirrors negative turning for most materials, but adds HTI10 as the signature aluminum grade (positive-exclusive). Top 8 by application frequency:

Grade Coating Workpiece (ISO) Best Application
HTI10 Uncoated K-class N (non-ferrous) Aluminum 6061/7075 specialist, the signature positive-only grade, sharp uncoated edge prevents BUE on sticky aluminum & copper
US735 CVD tough M20-M35 (stainless) + K Stainless steel turning, with interrupted cuts, cross-holes, the workhorse M-class grade for positive inserts
UE6110 CVD TiCN-Al2O3-TiN P10-P25 (steel) High-speed continuous steel turning, also used in negative but excellent in positive for finishing
UE6020 CVD multi-layer P20-P35 (steel) General-purpose steel turning, balanced wear + toughness
US7020 CVD steel P20-P30 (steel) Steel finishing & medium turning, shared with threading
VP15TF PVD TiAlN (Miracle coat) P15-M25 (steel + stainless) Universal PVD grade, the most versatile Mitsubishi insert, runs on virtually any workpiece below 220 m/min
UC5115 CVD black super-coat K05-K15 (cast iron) High-speed gray / ductile cast iron, the cast iron master grade
NX2525 Cermet (TiCN-Ni) P05-P15 (steel) Mirror-finish steel finishing, the unique cermet advantage (low BUE, high surface luster)
AP25N Cermet (TiC-TiN) P05-P15 (steel) Cermet alternative to NX2525, slightly tougher
Additional 5 grades stocked: F7030 (steel finishing), MC6015 (steel medium), MP7035 (stainless heavy), UC5105 (cast iron), UTI20T (utility grade for mixed batches)
Key advantage over negative turning: Positive inserts can use the HTI10 uncoated grade for aluminum — a setup that’s impossible with negative inserts because the double-sided negative geometry traps heat and the uncoated edge welds to aluminum. For any aluminum 6061/7075 job, this is the only correct answer.

Compatible Tool Holders

Positive inserts use a different holder than negative inserts (the pocket geometry differs due to the 7° clearance). Mitsubishi-style positive holders follow ISO 5608:

Recommended Cutting Parameters (Starting Point)

Always run a test cut before committing to a production run. These values are starting points for stable CNC lathe setups with adequate coolant:

Grade Workpiece Cutting Speed Vc (m/min) Feed f (mm/rev) Depth ap (mm)
HTI10 Aluminum 6061-T6 300 - 800 0.08 - 0.25 0.1 - 2.0
HTI10 Copper / Brass C360 200 - 500 0.08 - 0.20 0.1 - 1.5
NX2525 (Cermet) Carbon steel (1045 / S45C) 180 - 420 0.05 - 0.15 0.1 - 0.8
AP25N (Cermet) Alloy steel (4140 / SCM440) 150 - 300 0.05 - 0.20 0.1 - 1.0
US735 Stainless steel 304 / 316 90 - 180 0.10 - 0.25 0.4 - 2.0
VP15TF Stainless steel 304 / 316 (universal) 100 - 200 0.10 - 0.30 0.3 - 2.5
UE6110 Carbon steel (1045 / S45C) 250 - 450 0.10 - 0.30 0.5 - 2.5
UE6020 Low carbon steel 150 - 300 0.10 - 0.30 0.5 - 2.5
UC5115 Gray cast iron (HT250) 150 - 350 0.05 - 0.20 0.2 - 1.5
F7030 Steel finishing 200 - 350 0.05 - 0.15 0.2 - 1.0
For aluminum (HTI10) specifically: Use high cutting speeds (Vc 300-800 m/min) and sharp tools only. Avoid interrupted cuts — if the edge welds to the workpiece, switch to a fresh insert. Never use coated inserts (VP15TF, US735) on aluminum — the coating will chip from built-up edge and ruin the surface finish.

Why Positive Inserts Are Better for Swiss-Type Lathes

Modern CNC Swiss-type lathes (Citizen, Star, Tsugami, Tornos) work on slender bar stock (3-32 mm diameter) with live tooling and sub-spindles. Positive inserts dominate this market for three reasons:

  1. Lower radial force — Swiss workpieces are long and slender, so any radial force causes deflection and chatter. Positive inserts (especially 35° VBMT) reduce radial force by 20-40% vs negative.
  2. Smaller IC sizes — Positive inserts come in 6 mm (CCMT 06) and 9 mm (CCMT 09) IC sizes that fit the compact Swiss tool turrets, while negative inserts typically start at 12 mm IC.
  3. Single-side economy — Swiss lathes change inserts 5-10x more often than standard lathes due to small parts and high mix. The single-side design is faster to flip (10 sec vs 30 sec) which matters at high spindle utilization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the “P” or “G” in CCMT stand for?

The second letter indicates the clearance angle and tolerance: “P” = 11° clearance (less common, used for finishing with extra clearance), “G” = 7° clearance (most common, ground precision for mirror finish), “M” = 5° clearance (rare, used in heavy interrupted cuts). All three are positive (single-sided), in contrast to “N” which would mean 0° clearance (negative, double-sided).

Q: Can I use HTI10 on steel or stainless steel?

No. HTI10 is an uncoated K-class grade specifically formulated for non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass, bronze). On steel or stainless steel, the uncoated edge will wear out in seconds due to the high cutting temperatures. Use VP15TF or US735 for those materials.

Q: When should I choose VBMT over CCMT?

VBMT (35° diamond) has the lowest radial cutting force of any common positive insert, making it the best choice for:

  • Thin-wall workpieces (less than 1 mm wall thickness)
  • Long slender shafts prone to deflection
  • Profiling on complex contours (less vibration at low speeds)
  • Finishing on heat-sensitive alloys
Use CCMT (80° square) for general turning where radial force is not a concern and you want maximum tool strength.
Q: Why is cermet (NX2525) only for positive inserts?

Cermet works in both positive and negative forms, but it’s especially effective in positive because the sharp edge and low cutting force of the positive geometry pair well with cermet’s low BUE (built-up edge) tendency. The combination is the industry standard for mirror-finish steel turning on Swiss-type lathes and high-precision turning centers.

Q: Are these inserts compatible with non-Mitsubishi holders?

Yes. Mitsubishi positive inserts follow ISO 1832 / ISO 5608, the same standard as Sandvik, Kennametal, Iscar, Walter, and other major brands. The pocket geometry, IC size, and thickness are identical. As long as your holder accepts the same insert shape (e.g., CCMT 120408), the Mitsubishi insert will fit. Note that positive and negative inserts are not interchangeable in the same holder — the pocket geometry differs.

Q: How do I know if my workpiece needs a positive or negative insert?

Use this quick decision matrix:

  • Aluminum / copper / brass → Positive only (HTI10 grade, no alternative)
  • Mirror finish on steel → Positive (NX2525 cermet)
  • Thin-wall tube or slender shaft → Positive (VBMT 35°)
  • Swiss-type lathe, small parts → Positive (CCMT 06/09 compact sizes)
  • Heavy roughing, high MRR → Negative (CNMG 80° square, 8 edges)
  • Interrupted cuts, cast iron → Negative (CNMG / SNMG thick body)
  • Maximum tool life on long production runs → Negative (more edges per insert)
Q: Do you offer custom grade selection consulting?

Yes. For complex work (Inconel, hardened steel >HRC 55, exotic aluminum alloys like 7075-T6 with high silicon, or large batch optimization), our engineers can recommend the optimal grade + chip-breaker combination.
